Does Profectiv Growth Renew Really Work

the copyright one after the last one...

Neil, Friday, 25 April 2008, 11:15 clock

The above copyright to the past ...

had Reflecting on the copyrights I found here: http://nielsenhayden.com/makinglight/archives/009050.html # 191 539

It is the translation of my poem, The Day The Saucers Came in LOLcat by Abi Sutherland . I like it better than the original but I'm not sure if it would work, if not it would be based on knowledge of the originals (if you understand what I mean). (That here I am at Yale, as I read the original : http://www.you tube.com / watch v = JUkEPaN_BFY ?).

And two from the mailbag:

I am a lawyer. I am co-author of an article on fair use, which last year published in the Journal of the Copyright Society of the United States was. Much of it was a more verbose version (cut by many legal citations) of what you have today written in your diary. In practice, the one most important factor in whether a use was fair, just not sure how much money was made but the work was transformed. You a good understanding of copyright.

In addition, you have a good understanding of the difficulties that works based on others to treat copyright. The legal solution regarding your example with the Bible concordance is that the person who holds the copyright, has a "weak" copyright. (The more creativity in a plant infected, the stronger the copyright if the concordance is completely uncreative -. If it is just a list of words that could create in your computer - there is absolutely no copyright if the author of the concordance. but somehow subordinate, and has shown so that their own creativity, there is a "weak" copyright.) is

Unfortunately, in practice, a "weak" Copyright quite strong if it is part of a powerful company. For example, the Holzschnitti llustration in the original edition of Alice in Wonderland public domain and have no copyright protection. Disney's depiction of Alice - clearly a drawn version of the common-woodcut-Alice - other hand, is protected by copyright. It was expected that derived version a "weak" copyrights have . However, as came out of the computer game American McGee Alice, Alice was the one brunette, who did not like the Alice looked most people know. American McGee was supposed to be able to copy the commons-Alice as it had done Disney, but I guess they did not want to mess with Disney. (Although other reasons certainly played a role - they probably wanted to prevent that little kids buy the game by mistake -. But have played Disney copyright law has a role )

I think it's great that you have as an author no rabid views on copyright to sham t. I think many readers, acting defensively because of their favorite authors, understand the benefits of not absolute and will expire copyright does not. The creative community has a lot of public domain and fair use . (The descendants of authors are often anything but open to new interpretations of a work or creative criticism -. Hochstrittige the estate of Margaret Mitchell occurs to me there) If our modern views on copyright had always existed, you should not have free Shakespeare (who never had any copyright notice) can be quoted in Sandman and the story would have lost so some of their wealth. Or would it be crazy if you ask the heirs of Rudyard Kipling'd have to admit The Graveyard Book. copyright should not be so strong that they inhibit any other ideas or critical discussions.

I'm really looking forward to The Graveyard Book.

Neil,

when I think of your last encounter with a large metal tube, I wonder as it looks with health insurance. What is with you as more or less independent author (right?) From the health insurance for you and your family? Would not it be easier to move to Canada or back to England, where one reasonably has a universal health care?

Thanks, Jon

How? I write screenplays.

Honestly, even if it sounds stupid. As long as I draw a certain proportion of my income from Hollywood, I have health insurance at the clerk's Guild, which was a good health insurance when I joined, and now no longer so great, but still significantly better than none at all for me or my family.

(Occasionally, friends ask why I write screenplays - it costs much time and energy usually is not from the movie, and if he will still turn, the result has often written something completely different than you, and unlike than in a novel is one of the Kontrole dirket from the beginning, can be lied fired, or cheated, and even if I earn a lot of money with screenplays, I earn more with books that belong to me then and still are in my control and that bring in international money udn keep it up. I'm like, "health insurance" and if they are Ameriknaer, they understand it, while People from countries where health insurance is seen as a human rights such as education, consider me crazy.)

Why not move? I like my house and my youngest daughter likes (my older daughter already lives back in England) and her school friends and it is my right to write, now and then a writer and medical insurance for it to be. (I also like to write screenplays. It is everything surrounding what bothers me.)

(Incidentally, I am happy to say to that there is a heavy PVC pipe, not metal pipe was. Otherwise, if my face even more bruised than it is. The blue eye is almost gone, the nose is almost healed, and the cut in the lip would heal better if I'd have to speak ...)

...

Mark Buckingham and Shelly Bond and I have planned in the past month and a mystery. We planned a poster for the 20th Anniversary of Sandman for the Solten as many as the artist and other artists who were involved in Sandman as possible a character or two characters. We have been thinking about different ways to do that, and opted for a party, and then Mark has planned the party ...

Dei most perhaps 40 artists, who worked on Sandman and still live and record have promised - a few were simply too busy (unfortunately no Matt Wagner and Michael Zulli), and a few we are still looking.

But the first work of art has arrived. It is Sam Kieth , and the first time in twenty years that he has drawn Morpheus professional. (And the first time he has drawn Daniel.)

I think it would be a great poster.

a few final copyright thoughts before we leave the subject entirely

Neil, Thursday, 24 April 2008 16:49 clock

A few final comments on copyright, the issue before we finally go

I should proofread The Graveyard Book . I have proofreading once loved, but that was many years ago, mainly because correct me now, the English and the American version has, so anything that I find in one, read at a time has, and I have both editions Read side by side to see what made the editors at the different sides of the Atlantic from it. (Shakes miserably head ...)

The event in May at MIT is not sold out, tickets were only the first MIT students and employees offered. My friends at Pandemonium and The Million Year Picnic, according to both sell tickets now. was

A quick Googling me http://community.livejournal.com/millionyear/33091.html
with as much information about the MIT event.
If you want to reserve tickets by phone (617-492-6763), must collect them within 48 hours. No telephone reservation after 14 May Maximum of 4 tickets per booking.

I've seen that you are on the list of speakers for the Children's Book Council Australia in May. I'm curious if you have time between your two performances for signing.

If not for the CBCA, are you doing, signing somewhere else in Melbourne?

Thanks in advance

Clicking WHERE'S NEIL and you will land on http://www.neilgaiman.com/where/ and learn that three of Melbourne, two Sydney and Hobart event next week are planned. And to answer some other common questions, yes, I know I was twelve years in Perth and has not Ten years have not signed in New Zealand. I understand that it is unfair to the people in Brisbane and Adelaide is that I was not there to sign, and even worse for the people in Canberra, because, with only one body but two kinds of places have decided to Hobart, where I was ten years was not, rather than for Canberra (where I in July 2005 was ).

After your comments about the JK Rowling Lexicon case have read, I was concerned whether the whole thing on your handling of certain characters that you made for MacFarlane's Spawn series, recalls. Can I see vague similarities.

As long as the lexicon only existed on the site, and nobody has benefited from this is not an issue. But at the moment it is published in book form, it will make money with it. Let us look at the facts, people would buy it as Masen. In that case I think he has either not, or for permission (and he clearly has not). Since he has not, that is, but he is wrong? He does not need their permission to make money with characters that they invented it? Should he not have asked from the beginning?

I only saw the similarities. I realize that it does not take the characters to write new stories with them (like MacFarlane has done it) order for it to clear ....... but it seems to me wrong. If the book is poorly done, then that is also back to them and their world, right?

you are only in so far as similar in that they do not really cared about the turn, what have thought that people (including people who were involved in the dispute) (including the people who were involved in the litigation) what they would rotate. I thought the McFarlane case was about copyright and Todd tried to get to stick to his promise, and these records, claiming that he had written my expenses, and such. I think of Todd's vision was all one thing from I make my rules And I'm tricky and everyone has to do what I say or something of that nature

But in the end, when I had gained after the appeal in all 17 points, it was actually the following: to start the clock ticking when the copyright has been infringed, or if the violation is discovered? There is a three-year period for copyright claims. In 1996, Todd said UDN registered his copyright to have Spawn 9 and the Angela written series, then, three years later he let me know that he is none of our agreements with respect to the keep things that I had created, it is. Was my time has expired? His lawyers were sure that it was so, and even some of my lawyers were not sure whether I'm on thin ice.

And the decision by Posner Court of Appeal was, in essence, is no one expected that he, the Office of Copyright patrols to search violations under, and the clock only starts ticking when you learn it. (All the Posner decision must be read here. http://www.ca7.uscourts.gov/tmp/CR1FGCDA.pdf and is really very interesting)

In the Time Warner-Rowling Vander- Ark case, it is fact, not "Will it make money?" or "the Stones fan sites is put in the way?" nor about any of the other issues that people discuss online. From a legal perspective, it does not matter whether Ms Rowling was planning its own encyclopedia, or the money used from this charitable purposes, or so, although I believe that Ms Rowling is not sure it does not matter (because I would not care, I would have to its behalf).

As far as I can judge it, it's about a few gray areas of copyright law. I suppose, and I am so not a lawyer so that it will end only count if the words written by Mr Vander Ark, the genuine article factory edited enough, has to be considered a new work.

There is a Online-Come to Antar Sandman . If the people who wrote it, or someone else, decide to publish it, I could not stop, even if I did not want it published, even if Les Klinger I finally persuaded hääte to induce DC Comics, he commented an official Sandman write to let . (Someone has asked when Les Annotated Dracula appear - it will be in October 2008 his .) Because there are obviously a forming plant, it basiertauf my work, but stands on it.

If someone were to create a Web page that everything in Sandman lists alphabetically, like a dictionary or concordance ... if I plan to make such matters, not then. If someone with my work and words and ideas make money does not count. Whether it is a good or bad lexicon does not count. Whether I am frequently quoted or not, does not count (how often will I cited, falls under fair use, but to write my words, and you're safe). What matters is whether the new plant my own Work transforms sufficiently transformed into something else, by taking these entries and sorts them alphabetically. What's inside your own work? The Bible in the King James translation is in the. When one writes to a concordance or a lexicon, each person udn lists each location, something that a lot of time to complete, one could copyright sign on it. If someone else kopert this lexicon - just take your Bible dictionary and writes his name on it - you could sue him? Should you? Apart

And of personalities and newspaper commentaries and online reviews, that's what this case is tantamount.

Hi Neil,

How am I a fan of Harlan Ellison. As a feminist, but his misogyny makes me really sick.

I wonder how you get it under a hat that I and your friend Ellison is a great writer, udn that it can be really sexist. I'm especially curious because you yourself have two daughters. (And one of them went to a college for women, I also went to Mount Holyoke.) What do you say when Ellison makes derogatory remarks about women? I very much hope that you are doing more, not thinking about it and see "Harlan is Harlan check them off. Even if he is funny as hell, its setting actually harmful. Moreover, it is beneath him to rely on sexist jokes, and I really do not understand why he macht.Ich do not like it when he says he would use this kind of humor only way complaining. He is a white man - he can not claim sexism for women.

I would really appreciate an answer.

All the best,

Emily Neal

You know, in my presence Harlan has over the years some surprisingly derogatory remarks about studio members, the Walt Disney Company, a lot of restaurants we have visited several Eastern European publishers, English Food, the British (with the exception of me and his wife - at least sometimes), editors, other publishers, a male SF critic, television producers, Fantagraphics, friends of mine and made film producers, the list goes on and on. If Harlan common in my presence, talking about my friends, I remind him that they are my friends and he is a dork, and he either looks coyly from the laundry or told me I was an idiot, because I like too many people . There are many people and many classes of people such as studio accountants, Harlan has spoken about the very rude. I can not remember the "female" on his list are. (I remember that he once talked very rude to a studio head, but because she was studio manager, not because she was female.) Which means that your letter made me quite confused, because you love me just as may well ask'd like I could stand for his Harlan attacks on color, or left-handed, or jazz musicians.

What is "Harlan is Harlan" is concerned, it reminds me of what said the producer of the documentary Dreams With Sharp Teeth Erik Nelson, when I told him that the film is not balanced well and he should be a few Harlan's interview of enemies. He said: "This has also told Harlan I told him." Harlan, You are you own worst enemy.. "

Remembering Douglas #1

Neil, Wednesday, 23 April 2008 11:00 :. 34 Clock

memories of Douglas # 1

I wrote one of two or three Douglas Adams discharges This here was the introduction to MJSimpsons Biography of Douglas, Hitchhiker .

memories of Douglas

I met Douglas Adams in late 1983. I had been asking him for to interview Penthouse . I was expecting somebody cracked BBCisches and smart and someone who sounded like the voice of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy . I was greeted at the door of his home in Islington by a large man with a big smile and a large, slightly crooked nose, very clumsy and playful, as he would, despite its size still growing. He had just returned after a terrible time in Hollywood to England, and he was happy to be back. He was charming, he was funny, and he was talking about. He showed me his stuff: he was keen on computers that did not exist at that time almost and guitars, and giant inflatable crayons, which he discovered in America and shipped terrible costly to England had, before he had to find that they were very cheap in Islington. He was clumsy: he was leaning against things, tripped over, or sat down suddenly on top of it and broke it.

that Douglas had died, I learned on the morning after his death, in May 2001, from the Internet (that had there been no 1983). I was interviewed by telephone by a journalist in Hong Kong and a little fluttered by the death of Douglas Adams on the screen. I grunted, unimpressed (only a few days before that, Lou Reed performed at Saturday Night Live, to refute the Internet rumors about his death). Then I clicked on the link. Shortly after I stared at the BBC news site and had to acknowledge that Douglas was definitely dead.

"Are you OK?" Asked the journalist in Hong Kong.

"Douglas Adams is dead," I said stunned.

"Oh yes," he said. "It's been all day going through the news. Did you know him? "

" Yes, "I said. We continued with the interview, udnich do not know what was not said. The journalist reported after a few weeks once to tell me that nothing intelligible or usable more on the tape, after I had learned that Douglas had died and asked me if we could repeat the interview.

Douglas was an incredibly charming man, phenomenally articulate and amazingly helpful. In 1986 I dug quite a lot in his life, while I Do not Panic! worked. I sat in the corner of his office while I rummaged through old folders and draft Hitchhiker after another in various stages of development pulled over long-forgotten sketches stumbled, or scripts to Dr Who , newspaper clippings, and he was always ready to answer my questions and tell me things. He presented with dozens of people I had to find for interviews, people like Geoffrey Perkins and John Lloyd. He liked the finished book, or at least said that he liked it, and that helped too.

(A memory from that time: I was sitting in Douglas office, drank tea and waited for that he was finished with the phone so I could interview him, he had a little fun in the call about a project that he. for Comic Relief book worked. When he was finished, he apologized and explained to me then that he had to accept this call because it was John Cleese, and although he said it in such a way as to make clear was that he had delighted with the room threw: John Cleese had just called him and they had to talk professionally as adults. They knew at that time already more than nine years, but he wanted me to know that he had a great day. Douglas always had heroes.)

Douglas was unique. What are we all of course, but it is also true that there are certain types of people out there, and there was only one Douglas Adams. I have never met another man who could bring non-writing into an art form. No one else was in a position so happy to be fundamentally unhappy. No one else had the easy smile and the straight Nose, or the delicate aura of embarrassment that seemed to surround him like a shield.

DouglasTod After I was often interviewed because of him. I said I did not think he was ever really been a novelist, despite the fact that he had been an international best-selling author who has written several books that are now a quarter of a century later as classics. Writing novels was a profession to which he leaned, or over which he tripped, or he suddenly sat down and he broke.

I think that Douglas may have been something for which we do not have the word. A futurist or a commentator or something. We recognize that one day be that the most important job of all for someone to explain to the world the world in a way that they will not forget. Someone who can the plight of an endangered species just as easily (or at least as good as anything that Douglas ever did right was easy) to explain how he can explain an analogous race, what it means to be digital. Someone whose dreams and ideas, practical or impractical to always have the size of planets, and always goes ahead and bringing the rest of.

This is a book filled with facts about someone who dealt in dreams.

advice

Tuesday 22 April 2008, 11:47 clock

Council

I'm pretty nervous when it comes to teaching, I give this year to Clarion . I refused for years because I was not sure what I could teach anybody about writing. On the whole, I think I still think about it. I finally agreed, and still believe that I do not know enough to teach someone.

Today in the shower I wondered what was the best advice I ever by another Writers got. There was what, what someone told me on my first Milford, about style to use as cover but sooner or later run naked down the street to have, that was useful ...

And then I remembered. It was Harlan Ellison about ten years ago.

He said, "Hey Gaiman Why the stubble Every time I see you, you're stubbly Why Some English fashion dictates..?.?"

"Not really."

"What then? For God's sake, they have in England no razor?"

"If you have to know absolutely I do not like to shave because I have a strong growth of beard but sensitive skin. When I'm finished shaving, I'm usually somewhere scraped skin. So I'll do it as seldom as possible. "

" Oh. "He paused." The problem I have that too. Following: rubbing hair conditioner into your stubble. Let's wash it act a few minutes, then off. Then you shave. Shaving makes it easy. No skin irritation .. "

I tried it. It worked wonderfully. Best advice ever given me a different writer.

..

Dear Mr. Gaiman,

are Bill Hader and Doug Jones really big, or you are very (very) much smaller than I thought?

All the best,

JV

Bill Hader is a few inches taller than me, but still normal-human-beings-large (and in the photo Bill is also closer to the camera as Doug or me). Doug Jones however is inhumanly large - as Abe Sapiens, he towered over Hellboy, as Silver Surfer, he towered over Ben Grimm, as the faun in Pan's Labyrinth, he towered over, well, a little girl, but he really is absolutely insanely great. And incredibly nice.

Fair Use and other things

"Fair Use" and other things

After the reading, I went with Bill Hader and Doug Jones food. Behind us is Saint Mark's Bookshop, which I mention only because it is my favorite book store in New York. The Fotogrfin was a young Japanese woman who had previously come to Bill over to tell him that she was a fan and ask for a quick picture of what it in my eyes more than any other New York qualified than we later Outside met again to make both the image of us as well as to give me back the phone afterwards.

IWährend Passover and the Pope's visit, I am no longer in New York (which means that my chance to actually even "Good yontiff pontiff," (continuity note "Good day, Pope!" Where yontiff is Hebrew.) to say, from low back to be shrunk does not exist).

The event has a lot last night brought donations for the CBLDF, which is good. And we have won the Gordon Lee case, which is even better.

And I think it is high time that the link to the CBLDF to mention membership site, for those of you who would like to join or renew their membership must. here. ( www.cbldf.com sold brings you to the page where the memberships, signed prints and the rest.) (And do not forget that there Memberships are up to the highest level of ANGEL for $ 1,000 a year. )

And many new products, including this new T-shirt designs that I like quite well ...

...

many emails with questions regarding my thoughts on the JK Rowling / Steve Vander Ark copyright case. My basic reaction, based on what I have read, and the gray area in law, is "Well, would go if I'm around, I would feel probably flattered.", But this is obviously not how JK Rowling feels. I can not imagine trying to stop the unauthorized books that have appeared on me or about my work, and where it was possible, I tried to help, and even if I have the books did not like, I have shrugged his shoulders and let it go.

When you consider in what a spongy area surrounding the copyright of "Righteous Use exists ", I can understand that the judge will make no ruling, and I assume that, regardless of the outcome of the case is sure to appeal.

My heart lies with the people who make the unauthorized books , probably because my first two books were not authorized, and one of them, Ghastly Beyond Belief would have been incredibly vulnerable, if anybody has tried, Kim Newman and me to sue our work, by a book full of quotations of people who perhaps would not find in this book, and went far beyond the just Nutzuung. (What, as I told my British publisher, has disappeared as a concept of British copyright law, even if a little googling the can not confirm .)

Most comments in the network can be divided into two camps, depending on personality and opinions. As with most legal gray areas, not the last word is spoken, and even if the appellate court makes a decision, the final say in the matter not be discussed because "fair use" one of these things like pornography, we should know that we recognize consoles when we see it.

Also I am fascinated by the new rumor which have their origin in this thing - I have read today on the editorial page of The Guardian where someone began his comments by saying:

It is said that Neil Gaimen has been paid, so he is not Rowling criticized for a number of similarities to his work.

I thought "if that's true, I've not heard . As far as I know, the crazy Mugglefrau Nancy Stouffer is the only one who has ever said here:

http://discuss.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/zforum/01/author_stouffer032801.htm

WDC: I read somewhere that some details in Rowling's books as stolen ideas from the Sandman comics could be considered - I think that owls had news for magicians to give an example. When asked, the response from Neil Gaiman Sandmanautor So what? Storyteller always grab here and there on things when they write something new. Why bother you so much more than any other, what things maybe other works have been borrowed (and I say MAYBE)? Because you have so many examples? I've seen on your page and think this is mostly accidental or does not have enough substance to justify this Pahei, just as owls messengers for Gaiman rechtferigen would be to cry plagiarism.

Nancy Stouffer: In fact, Gaiman has certainly initially screamed plagiarism. Only when he had a movie contract, changed his comments. At first he was angry terrible.
(This is the Nancy Stouffer whose case was rejected in court had to pay and 2 million in legal fees and a penalty of 50,000 dollars for "Submission of gefäkschten documents and false testimony." She lied frequently.)

In fact, I've then in 1998 said in the Dreaming site, existed long before this page, than all the nonsense started:

And I think I disappointed him because I told him that I think most definitely NOT that Rowling had stolen from me, which I doubt she has ever read, udn that it would not matter to me if it had: I was not the first writer who has invented a young magician with potential, and Rowling was not the first to have one sent to school. It is not the ideas but at the things you make of it.

is genre fiction, such as Terry Pratchett once said, a colorful stew. It takes was out, things are done purely else. The stew on the boil.

But if the states in the Film world in mind I am pretty happy when he is not played by a muscular medium-old Austrian.)

I'm nciht sure how in the "Gaimanbeschuldigt Rowling of plagiarism." could turn. But I guess it sounds better than the truth.

What Happend To The Kelly Family

Very very sleepy post

Neil, Friday, 18 April 2008, 8:39 clock These are the best news I've got a long time - and at the beginning of reading this evening was allowed to announce very exciting: http://forum.newsarama.com/showthread.php?t=154204

And I would like to thank Gordon Lee for his perseverance and his attitude. It's hard for people when they feel the authorities are on the hunt for them. It must be hard, if they are actually on the hunt for you.

As I said in my announcement, the CBLDF has spent over 100,000 dollars to make sure that this attempt is not a legal abortion is approved, and every dollar of it comes from fans and readers and professionals. So we lay two nights ago, an event for publishers, the nature of the books (and graphic novels bring out now), to spread the idea that a) they should know what the CBLDF is - they might even need us, and b) we would see it like if they were to become a member.
There are a few photos from the event at the end of this blog entry ...

http://pwbeat.publishersweekly.com/blog/2008/04/18/icv2-conference-and-cbldf-reception

The CBLDF reading tonight was fun, and Bill Hader is hilarious. (His description of me as I listen to Al Pacino, as he presents his interpretation of the Sandman movie would have been worth the admission price alone, I need not pay anyway.)

Spiderman? That confused me.

Q: Was this the face that launched a thousand ships? A: No.

Neil, Tuesday, 15 April 2008, 15:36 clock question: Was this the face that the ship floated ...? Answer: Yes. Hi Neil, Come on, show us a picture. You know you want it ;-)

Here is a picture taken with the camera handy for curious friends. It is old news, just after the Doctor was gone, and I'm still dazed a bit. (Curiously, as such things are sometimes drove my doctor by degree, in order to ask me for advice for his novel, as the matter had just happened. So I had within minutes of a doctor here.)

Today I see a little less numb from the nose is even bigger, and it is ointment on it to prevent crusting and scarring. Opinions vary here, if I will have eyes anda in New York or not. Opinions also auseinader about whether I should try, to cover up for the interviews on Friday the bruises with makeup, or whether I buy latex and fake blood intended to make it even more interesting (my heart says the latter, the former my mind).

Maddy I have this morning went to school. It has an extremely cool crescent-shaped scar near the eye, because it is a small child ran into a table corner. She said

"Will you have a scar?" "Maybe."

"I like my scar. You know, people ask me recently that I've known since kindergarten look as if they would grade the first time."

"Really, what do you tell them."

"What you told me, what to say when people ask. "

I thought for a long time. I do not know." And that was? "

" I tell them I have the scar from a sword fight. "

"Oh. Good. "

Dear Neil
What is it like to live in a world where you sometimes just a famous movie producer (or was it a director?) Can call to chat? Is that nice? Or sometimes lonely? Or I'm just arrogant?
Thank you for your time.
Ian

not overbearing, but it is somewhat irrelevant, at least part of the celebrity. Friends are friends and colleagues are colleagues. When you work with them it takes about 20 seconds to about this feeling of "Oh my God, I talk to X!" get over and doing what you're there (if the work is). If they are famous, are you thinking that with the celebrity only when someone else says "excuse was that X?" or asks for an autograph or something.

I no famous movie producer or director would call for a chat. But I would a friend who produced or directed and famous, call for a chat. Big difference.

I'm happy I'm not a celebrity and not really famous. Among the people who like what I do, I am for what I do, quite well known, and known I do not want to be. And being famous is on just about all the famous people I know, a side effect of their activity, and usually that's what love to do, and it is moreover not a very desirable side effect.

(Not necessarily a bad side effect - you can do good to

There are also two of me .) Lonely, when that happens and wherever it is happening in the world, lonely, and that has nothing to do with fame (with the exception of occasional side effects such as Because I do what I do, I'm sitting in a hotel room in a country where I do not know, far away from my family and friends. And authors go there as compared to stand-up comedians or Truck drivers still good).
But then I am to rent the kind of person who dreams of being a passenger cabin on a freighter, and six months to travel around the world and write a book.

Hey Neil,

I've heard that you'll see at Comic-Con in New York. Although that would be tol, $ 500 and more are pretty expensive, so please let know when you look over somewhere on the east coast!

There's a party / reception for VIPs (VIPs are defined as "people who bought tickets for $ 500"), where there is a gift bag, great seats and book signing. But a ticket for the actual event costs only $ 20, which is much cheaper is. Plus 30 dollars for the ticket to the convention on Friday (or $ 45 for the whole weekend).

The Fairy Feller's Master Stroke

Neil, Saturday 12 April, 2008, 18:11 clock I was reminded yesterday, here is the introduction to Mark Chadbourn award-winning story The Fairy Feller's . (For the curious here's a link to the website of the publisher. Paperback As it is sold out, but they still have a few bound copies .) (Click on the image to see it much larger.)

Me and my Dadd and Mark Chadbourn.
My mind tells me that I have the image itself, titled mysteriously have
Fairy Feller's Master Stroke , reprinted for the first time in full size with 14 or so on the foldout cover of a QUEEN album seen and it has ever made any impression on me. This is one of the strange things in this picture. It has to be in the original look, paint on canvas, the real, most often when it's not off in the space of Preraffaeliten at the Tate Gallery, somewhat lost amid the magnificent beauty of Preraffaeliten, all udn so much bigger elaborate than the modest Elfenhof, walking through the daisies to make it real. And when you see it, several things become clear, some immediately, some with time.
early 20s when I was, I received a copy of a book for review, a book of photos of a Victorian doctor named Diamond, which he had gamcht by the inmates of Bedlam. Hopeless Spotted lunatics who struggle their hands while they wink at the camera straight faced and uncomfortable pose, as long as needed to expose the film, even if her hands fluttering like doves often blurred. Portraits of madness udn pain and in only one of the photos was a man, even a madman to see who actually did something.

The Man in the picture has a beard. He has an easel before him on which he is a small oval picture of astonishing delicacy He paints clever stares into the camera and his face is a small, sharp smile to see. His eyes shine. It looks squat and proud, and when I was a year later for the first time his masterpiece The Fairy Feller's Master Stroke in the original saw was the first thing I noticed that the dwarf is sad with the white beard, which dominates the center of the picture and stares at the viewer, the aged Richard Dadd. The people who visit the area of Preraffaeliten at the Tate Gallery do, the answer for their own reasons, and in some remote and melodic. The Waterhouse and Millais and Burne Joneses use their own magic: Spectators walk past the images, enriches their lives. The Dadd, however, is a trap, and those who have in their Selle a place for him are caught. You can actually spend hours front of the painting are lost in it, and wonder about the elves and goblins and men and women, try to surprise their size, their shape, their eccentricities ("Every time I look at me, I see something new." like Mark Chadbourne narrator Danny, often so unreliable, but reliable at this point, we are told).

Dadd knew who they were, the people in the painting. He knew their lives. He knew what they were. You know, when you see it.

If you have seen the painting prints only if you are on a journey to get just the view, then the next thing one surprised at the size. It is smaller than we thought - less than seems possible. It must fit in. after all, very much. The authorized printing of the Tate Gallery of The Fairy Feller's Master Stroke, which I bought after I had seen it, is almost twice as big as the painting itself.

And the painting is not the pressure. The image itself, in its context, has magic - in the colors, the detail - no picture, no posters, no postcard to take each begin to appear.

So on we look like Danny and his mother the picture and see every brush stroke.

And it can be for hours , A slightly different look before you notice about the painting, something so big and strange and obvious that one can not understand why you have not seen it once, or why no one else has said a word about it.

It is unfinished.

A large part of the lower part, where the color choices seem odd and washed are mapped only on the smooth brown of the canvas. The grass in beige, that draws attention to the cases, therefore, beige, because Dadd - out of many years to paint it - had no more time. He gave away before it was finished.

And there is another Thing you know, without question, if you look at the original look udn, namely that: he knew what he was painting. He had seen it, clever with those eyes. He had gone to the great journey, the greatest of all holidays, and that was what he brought back.

There was this feeling that one of the great mysteries of the universe could be released if it would be looked at long enough to understand the evidence, says Danny, Mark says, and they're right.

Before his madness, before the murder of his father, in front of a bad-fated trip to France (he was on the train to the attack was arrested on a fellow traveler on his way to Paris to kill the emperor) were Dadds paintings very pretty, and perfectly normal, ordinary chocolate box cover images of fairy scenes from Shakespeare. Nothing extraordinary. Nothing that the time would survive. Nothing real.

And then he was crazy. Not just a little crazy, but crazy spectacular, a father murderous madness of demons and ancient Egyptian gods. He spent the rest of his life behind bars - first in Bedlam, and later as one of the first prisoners of Broadmoor - and after a while he bagnn paint and exchanged his paintings for favors one. The box of chocolates elves had disappeared. Now it was his paintings of fairies, bible scenes, prison inmates (real or imagined) of such intensity that they do, we still have to make such resources. They were painted with such intensity and determination that it is scary.

He spent the rest of his life behind bars, locked up the mt dangerous lunatics, so dangerous crazy as any of them, but with a message for us, a message from the other side. Besides, his life was wasted.

However, he left us paintings, puzzles and an unfinished painting (The Tate by Siegfried Sassoon left, if I remember correctly) and which we continue to apply. Angela Carter wrote a radio play about the amazing picture, Dadds life, Victorian Arts:
Come Unto These Yellow Sands
. I've written a movie review, in which this image was the key, and once I was about to organize an anthology in which each action should Feller story of one of the witnesses of the chestnut-crushing blow of the Fairy. And now Mark Chadbourn gives us a novel in which the painting is a hint (maybe), a murder weapon (possible) and, above all, is unquestionably a key: a key to a Life, to a family, a secret to solutions to madness, and above all to the reality.

It is a story of a wasted life, a story about love and pain, and a place where paintings and Dadd Dadds life both a template udn be an excuse: a reason to live and a reason to die, and, last, we understand what we have read.

Does Mark Chadbourn history to answer the riddle of the elves cases and his masterful shock? Danny's mother certainly thinks so, but Danny himself recognizes that any response can only be a step on the road. That the secret of how the painting as our understanding of the painter will always remain unfinished. And that perhaps is the master stroke of them all ... Neil Gaiman

What Color Eyebrows If My Hair Is Violet?

Religiously interrupting your being since February 2001

Neil, Friday, 11 April 2008, 20:49 clock

Religious disturbing your existence since 2001 I'm brain dead grad something - yesterday I flew to LA late afternoon had a meeting about a movie I will write based on one of my books (I think I can at this time are not accurate, at least not until the contracts are signed or I had an OK to talk about it), and it was really good. My producer is an author, and we sat together and were of one opinion, what should I do. The worst thing about writing for someone else is, and that was especially films, I notice multiple times over the years, when you talk to an editor or producer and you think you are talking about the same. Then you separate yourself, you do what you thought to have agreed, and it goes a bit and discovered how wrong it was, and while it describes as a romantic love story with ghosts now they have a chilling ghost story, with perhaps a touch of love is in there, and all are unhappy and the project failed. In any case, the class will be here, I think - it felt as if we were talking about the same book and the same movie.
Then my cell phone rang and I found myself in a hospital emergency room again, embarrassed to visit a friend who had just been admitted elsewhere and wanted to be. On the whole it was not as severe as ER
still as funny as
Scrubs, but I felt definitely, as I was walked into the American television wonderland. Late back at the hotel I had a past due Articles about crossover fiction for the British Writers and Artists Yearbook worked
,
because they have asked me to write something for them, and because the issue of the Yearbook of 1983, a really important part was that I had, when I set out to become a journalist.

The alarm clock at five in the morning and going to the airport to fly home. Have the articles for the yearbook in the Northwest lounge completed. Have it sent. I heard that they are expected in Minneapolis "crippling" snow, but it was only rain to snow and was only when I was safely home. And it was vital that I returned on time, because I had to be home for ... The night of friends. Although I am the adults present. The main roles Maddy and five of their 13-14-year old girlfriends, which I chauffeur (to the cinema and back), advisor ("you can probably more cheese pack this nachos"), things-in-the-oven-digit and most importantly - because they all just Prom Night had seen and were a bit lively - Provider of helpful tips ("You better stay all together tonight after all it is a big, old house, and when you consider how many people here over the years. died ... well, I've already said too much ...") games. It takes place during I type in here. ...
An article about blogging authors

The Age
,

in which we learn that my blog is no longer what it once was. Probably true, although in the last seven years, every now and again had such phases. Nevertheless, if I go this summer on a research trip, I will probably not blog for a while and write everything in notebooks.
A Wonderful Article on Daily Telegraph Fantasy in by Mark Chadbourn . For his book The Fairy Feller's Master Stroke I once initiation have written. If I can find them, I put it in here. It revolves mainly around Richard Dadd, one of my other quirks.

Hi Neil, I thought it might interest you here:

to make such amazing sculptures out of books fascinated me (and makes me cringe a little - no, not books "- but still it's nice:)).
They are beautiful, is not it? You write great Books. You were even times my favorite author, but then I got my Virconium series of M. John Harrison because the bottom was small on it "with an introduction by Neil Gaiman.
is now my favorite author M. John Harrison and Virconium is my bible. You've even chased away from first place. Discharges are like little bridges from author to author. Thank you build so many.

Ironically,

Evan

PS The introduction is quite good.
're welcome. Mike Harrison is one of my Lieblinsgautoren - I am delighted that he is yours now.
I just wanted to say that your work interfere with my religious life !!!!!
I hope that is good.

I feel a little left grad. I had a wonderful conversation with one of my professors about our admiration for your books. But first we had a tough discussion that I have to rewrite my Geschcihte for him. Again. Why? Because he does not not credible, found that the character - a cop - think certain thoughts or be concerned or want something for a shooting star would.

police officers are only human, right? They include a rape case be disturbed even though they are experienced police officers? You still have feelings?

[sigh] This is motivated by cursing your statement that 95% of which ends up in your drafts at the end in the finished book. Was it always like this? Gabs a time when someone has rejected your work, because they believed in what you write is unrealistic? Or they leave you more freedom, because you usually write in magical fantasy worlds?

A student who says her name because her professor will read the page here

(let aside that he will notice them anyway, because she has betrayed too many details ...)

me.

Let me see. To answer the obvious Fargen First, there was ever someone who has rejected my work as unrealistic? Probably, although no concrete example comes to mind grad. Normally reject siesie because it is not good enough. You never have a reader satisfied that police officers do something when they see a shooting star. You have to convince your readers that this one

cop would. You must make your characters around enough that the reader almost expected that this police officer wants something if they see a shooting star ..
No one can
in Fantasy more freedom, just as in romantic or historical fiction or even non-fiction. It's called suspension of disbelief, and writing it is what you do and what you build, and it is as thin as a soap bubble. They burst easily. (I remember to have once been fucked by Rachel Pollack for something in one of my short stories. "But that's the only one in history, the is true
" I told her. "It does not matter whether it is true , "she said." It is only important if it is credible in the context of history. "And I knew she was right.)
way, I found that the police in the United States and Great Britain was always very helpful to authors, or at least to me. Nothing is better than a day to be on the road with a policeman, or to have shown a guard and ask nosy questions in order to write an author you can believe. And conviction and security are half the battle ..

I recently bought in an antiquarian and suddenly realized that I do not know how writers earn their money. I get along with advances and royalties (zumnidest something) But
first Writers also get royalties on used books? Sales figures include only new, so ...

second And book clubs? Earns it?

I earn enough to buy me new books, but that was not always so - I am not trying to denigrate bookstores and libraries. If more money to buy new books for the authors (and illustrators) means, which leads to new books, then I buy it again.

Thanks, I'm looking forward to "The Graveyard Book" (wish though I do, it would already be out there to deal with the horrible spring weather coincide)

ethane

No, used books have authors nothing, but for the we have indeed already paid once. Someone has bought time and I'm happy with the fact that they are resold. (How times in

Wired
(
whole answer to me here

) and
have said repeatedly here in this diary : If you buy one of my books (or sent for review gets), it belongs to you. did you buy it (or paid to get). You can resell it. I do not have a problem with Amazon lists used copies still the second-hand section of a bookstore. It Is your store. you can buy new books, as a bound book or in paperback, you can find it used or as a collector's item. I do not mind. I am only interested to read people. As I have long and wide

explained here in this diary

, which last month in Wired

was quoted as books do not come with one single user license, and I think this is a good thing.

And in the last six years I have not changed my opinion about it. writers benefit from book clubs - The club does not pay royalties for each book They usually pay a fee to the publisher, which is shared with the author, to be allowed to publish the book (often in a smaller form or cheaper Paier than the original) or make a contract with the publisher, normal expenditures to print (the book club edition of Stardust for example as the original DC output, the same when it comes to size and binding and paper, for they have at the end of the pressure just a few thousand more books with the club logo printed).

Hi Neil!

I have a book by a grad German authors read, borrowed from some of your stories, especially from Never Land. The story is (a) in London, and Mr. Croup and Mr. Vandemaar come forward (with other names), and some other detail was awfully familiar.
I was just wondering, what do you say when someone else is using "your" ideas and characters. Do you mind that? Honor it up? Does it interest you at all?

I hope you have answered this question yet, but if so, I could not find it in my blog and would like to have a tip.

Thanks in advance!

L.

It is, imitation is the sincerest form of Shcmeichelns, and frankly I feel most flattered when I hear something. It has more great if the people who do that, you cite as an influence or thank you in the Foreword or so, but I do not so much.
